The kit for a long night

Earplugs you can buy in Manila, what a night does to your heart rate, the hydration on the shelf, and what the best new rooms in Asia run.

Start with your ears

The thing most people carry home from a great room is the ringing. Earplugs made for music are designed to bring the level down while keeping the sound clear, at least by their makers' account, and the easiest pair to buy in Manila is Loop. Altitude lists the Loop Experience 2 in gold at ₱1,440, down from ₱1,695, with same-day pickup in Metro Manila and a one-month warranty.

Loop expanded into Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines in 2024, though we found no named Philippine distributor. Everything else on our list is import only. Etymotic's ER20XS turns up through Ubuy at around ₱2,620, and Alpine's PartyPlug sells abroad for about US$13.56, with no Philippine retailer we could find.

Put them in before the room gets loud, and keep the case in the same pocket as your phone. A pair you leave at home does nothing for you.

What a night does to your heart

The largest look at this so far comes from WHOOP. A 2026 study in PLOS Digital Health followed 20,968 WHOOP wearers across 5.1 million days of data. Each extra drink lined up with heart rate variability about 3.3 milliseconds lower for men and 3.8 for women, and resting heart rate 2.4 to 2.8 beats per minute higher.

Two things softened the effect: drinking earlier in the evening and sleeping longer afterwards. Read it with one caveat. WHOOP paid salary support to seven of the authors, and we found no comparable study from Oura, Garmin or Apple to check it against.

If you would like a tracker of your own, the shopping is awkward. WHOOP has no official sale here, and Oura is import only. The Apple Watch Series 11 launched here from ₱32,490, according to ReVü, and Garmin is carried by Kinetic, where we saw no prices.

Hydration that is on the shelf

You do not need to order anything from abroad to drink water with salts in it. Pedialyte in 500 ml bottles is listed at Watsons for ₱138.75 to ₱145.25, and a four-pack of 500 ml Pocari Sweat was ₱198 on a Lazada listing we found. Hydrite, at ₱18 a sachet, is an oral rehydration salt sold for diarrhoea, so it stays off our party list.

Liquid I.V. is import only, and the reseller prices we saw were too scattered to print. On the evidence, we found no controlled study comparing electrolyte drinks with plain water after a night out, so buy the one you like the taste of. This is reporting, not medical advice.

What the best rooms run

Sound is the part of a club you feel before you see it. FVTURE in Bangkok holds 6,000 people and runs an L-Acoustics system of L2 and L2D, with sixteen KS28 subs and two KS21s, installed by Vision One, according to Inavate APAC in April. It reportedly opened in December 2025.

Zouk Singapore rebuilt three rooms on L-Acoustics, with the Main Room on one L2D hang per side and six KS28 subs, Inavate reported in September. Closer to home, Cove Manila at Okada reportedly runs Funktion-One, per Tatler. Those are the rooms we measure Manila against, and the first question we ask any new club is what it put in the ceiling.

Phones down, map up

Some of the best floors abroad have made the phone the thing you leave behind. Signal in Brooklyn bans phones on the dance floor, Basement in Maspeth puts stickers over cameras, and Chinese Laundry in Sydney offers camera stickers to anyone who wants one. We know of no Manila club with a rule like that yet, so the first hour of your night is a good place to try your own.

The one tool we built for this city is the Tonight map. It pins the rooms that are open, shades them by how busy they are likely to be on that day of the week, and lists what is on from our calendar. Heat is editorial for now and pins are approximate. If you are in a room, DM "HERE" and the venue, and it moves up the map the same night for everyone else.
